WestGold – Gold Recovery – GAC

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is a highly porous form of carbon used extensively in the mining industry for gold recovery. Produced from materials like coconut shells or coal, GAC offers a large surface area and strong adsorption properties, which make it ideal for attracting and holding gold particles from cyanide leach solutions. Its mechanical strength and resistance to attrition make it suitable for continuous operation in gold extraction processes.

Role in the Gold Recovery Process

GAC is a key component in the Carbon-in-Pulp (CIP), Carbon-in-Leach (CIL), and Carbon-in-Column (CIC) methods. During these processes, the gold-cyanide complex is adsorbed onto the surface of the carbon particles from the leach slurry. Once loaded with gold, the carbon is separated, washed, and sent to a desorption process where the gold is stripped and recovered through electrowinning or precipitation. This method significantly improves recovery rates and is more efficient than traditional extraction techniques.

Benefits of Using GAC in Gold Mining

The use of GAC in gold recovery offers several advantages: high adsorption efficiency, fast kinetics, reusability, and minimal carbon losses. Its ability to handle large volumes and withstand harsh chemical environments ensures cost-effective and reliable performance. GAC also enables more environmentally friendly gold recovery by reducing the need for mercury or other toxic extraction agents, making it an essential material in modern, sustainable gold mining operations.
