WestAqua – Water Treatment – GAC

Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) is characterized by larger particle sizes in comparison to powdered form. This results in a smaller external surface area, making diffusion of the adsorbate a significant factor. As a result, GAC is the preferred choice for absorbing gases and vapours due to its faster diffusion rate. It finds application in water treatment, deodorization, and separation of components in flow systems. GAC can be in the form of either granules or extrusions.

    Role in Water Purification

GAC works by adsorbing impurities as water flows through the carbon bed. It effectively removes contaminants like volatile organic compounds (VOCs), disinfection by-products (such as trihalomethanes), and industrial pollutants. Additionally, it plays a vital role in removing chlorine and chloramine, which improves taste and protects downstream equipment in both municipal and residential water systems. GAC is also often used as a pre-treatment step before reverse osmosis or UV purification.

    Advantages of Using GAC in
    Water Treatment

The use of GAC offers several benefits: it enhances water quality by eliminating harmful chemicals, improves taste and odour, and supports compliance with regulatory standards. It is a low-maintenance and cost-effective solution with the added advantage of being regenerable, which makes it sustainable for long-term use. Its adaptability across domestic, commercial, and industrial water purification systems has made GAC an essential component in modern water treatment processes.
